Training: NWS River Forecasting

  • 04/28/2015
  • 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
  • Polk County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) 1907 Carpenter Ave Entrance on east side of bldg. Des Moines, IA 50314

The National Weather Service office in Des Moines will provide an overview of its river flood forecasting tools.  These tools include the traditional forecasts on its Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS) Webpages, as well as relatively new ensemble river forecasts.  Whereas the traditional AHPS forecasts show a single forecast that corresponds to the expected rainfall over the next 24 hours, the ensemble river forecasts allow the user to see how the river would respond to different amounts of rainfall over varying time periods--all the way out to 72 hours (3 days).  This added information allows decision makers to determine what the river may do if actual rainfall ends up being more or less than what was expected.

The target audience for this overview is those people who would be involved in monitoring flood conditions and making decisions regarding protective measures.  Time will be provided for questions and answers.

This event is free to attend but we ask that you please register.
