MENTORPROGRAM:
Scenes of disasters replay on television across the country with numbing regularity: A flood destroys a local business district…a fire sweeps through a small-town manufacturing plant…a winter storm causes widespread power failure.
Every year emergencies take their toll on business and industry in terms of lives and dollars. But something can be done. Organizations of all sizes can limit injury and damage and return more quickly to normal operations if they plan ahead. Preparedness works.
Recognizing that small business owners and organizations may possess limited understanding of the risks and steps they can take to reduce the impacts of a disaster it proves to be beneficial to provide mentors to the small business community. Many of the Safeguard Iowa partners have expertise in business continuity, risk management, safety and security, public health and emergency management. The goal is to capitalize upon this expertise to increase preparedness among the public and private sectors.
Mentors offer valuable lessons from their own experiences when providing guidance and direction to others. Effective mentoring leads to improved knowledge, skills and performance by providing personal access to important know-how and savvy practices.
When an organization undertakes readiness activities to assure the continuity of their own operations, it’s also bolstering the resilience of the community, state, region and nation in which it operates. A well-prepared organization can protect its employees, current and potential customers and suppliers. Effectively responding to a local disaster also helps protect jobs, tax revenues, supplier income streams, investor returns and the well-being of customers. The well-prepared organization aids in the overall recovery by not becoming a victim itself.
The Safeguard Iowa Partnership Mentor Program includes public- and private-sector partners who are willing to serve as mentors. The program follows the recommendations of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Ready Business program.
